Yet again, we were fortunate enough to travel as a large group to a far off country to talk about our research, meet many other linguists, and hear about many great projects. This time, we attended the 'Methods in Dialectology XVI' Conference in Tokyo! Also thanks to our local ties, we enjoyed our time on and off the campus and took home loads of great memories from this trip.

Spain reloaded! After an incredible conference experience last year in Murcia, a substantial Bern contingent once again travelled to Spain to attend another four-day conference: iClave 9 in Malaga.
> iClave9 Media At the Phil.-hist. Forschungstag 2017 organised by the Walter Benjamin Kolleg (WBK) here at the University of Bern, we were awarded for our Micronesian Englishes poster!
> Event website > Poster On Thursday and Friday, March 09 and 10, we hosted our own conference here at the University of Bern, Switzerland. We enjoyed presentations on Vanuatu, Fiji, Samoa, American Samoa, the Cook Islands, Palau, Guam, Saipan, Pohnpei, Kosrae, Nauru, the Marshall Islands, Kiribati, and Hawaii! This two-day event was thoroughly enjoyable, equally fruitful, and an overall great experience. Check out the conference website - and these snapshots.
Three days definitely worth the long journey for Sara and Tobi: The conference in Chiayi, Taiwan, was simply great! It brought together younger and older linguists focusing on the Asia-Pacific region and gave us the chance to attend keynote speeches of big names like William Labov, Gillian Sankoff, Dennis Preston and more. We both presented a poster, met old friends and made new ones, and genuinely enjoyed our time. After our adventurous stay on the islands and work on our data we were able to present our preliminary results for the first time to a big audience at the IAWE conference in Istanbul. We enjoyed the new insights and research about 'World Englishes' a lot and were very happy to be part of the IAWE community for these three days! The adventure starts this week! Reason enough to have a proper Farewell Brunch at the English Department.
We are very excited about our fieldwork trips! We hope you enjoy the summer without us ;-) We’ve just come back from a very productive and wonderful 3 days at Schloss Münchenwiler, where we conducted our CUSO-funded workshop. The location of the Schloss was nothing short of amazing and we very much enjoyed our time working, dining and being accommodated on such a picturesque site. It is great that this workshop also marked the very first days of a finally completed team of researchers on the Micronesia Project: Sara Lynch has now officially teamed up with us and we are very excited to spend the next three years working together. Welcome to Switzerland and welcome on board, Sara! We would very much like to thank both our guest speakers (Andrea Sudbury, Kazuko Matsumoto, Daniel Schreier and Nicole Eberle) and our participants who provided insights into their fieldwork which were interesting, instructive, although may have sometimes caused anxiety but mostly excitement, and never failed to be entertaining too. We have learned so much from you and would like to once again express our most heartfelt ‘Thank yous’. Your inputs are truly invaluable and will support us greatly in the preparation of our own fieldtrips. Thank you all so much! - Dominique & Tobias Delivered the very first presentation of our project today: the Forschungskolloquium Berner Linguistik (BeLing) are now officially filled in.
