KOSRAE

FEDERATED STATES OF MICRONESIA

Picture
Sara Lynch Sara Lynch studied Anthropology and Spanish at Maynooth University, Ireland and Universidad de La Laguna, Tenerife, Spain, before obtaining an M.A. in Linguistics in University College Dublin in 2013. She spent 2013-2015 in Madrid working as part of the Spanish Ministry of Education’s National Bilingual Programme. Her main research interests are emerging Englishes, sociopragmatics, sociophonology, intercultural communication, Irish English, and mobilty and language.

She joined the University of Bern in April 2015, and is currently finishing her PhD for the SNF-funded project "English in paradise?: Emergent varieties in Micronesia" focusing on the history, development and structure of Kosraean English.

PhD thesis summary:
I investigate sociolinguistic effects on the emergence of English in the Federated States of Micronesia. I obtained the 96 sociolinguistic interviews as data for this project during a 3 month fieldtrip to Kosrae in 2015 supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation.
Through a World Englishes lens, I provide an overview description of Kosraean English and using a language variation and change approach I examine  three linguistic variables (/h/ deletion, [h] insertion and quotatives) quantitatively.
